coke crates

Through garage sales
I have found a couple of coke crates.
One man was selling many, in all colors.
I could have had them all (20 +) for ten dollars.

Rain was coming down, and
off course, I didn't need that many.
I have told myself there can be no regrets
when I thrift.

But, I do think about those crates and how they would have made
some fun gifts.

The yellow crate holds my cookbooks on top of the
fridge.

The red one is up in the garage.
I really do need to go find it.

Probably a good thing I didn't get the 20 + crates because they
would be up in the garage, too.

Take care,
Denise

The Red Lanterns

The weekend we bought our Christmas tree,
I filled our windowboxes with evergreen
from our tree and from Lowes
(they kindly give away anything they have cut off from the trees.)

Finding some old red lanterns in our basement,
I placed them in the windowboxes,
nestled within the greenery.
Simple and perfect, except the lanterns were old and so was the glass.
As I took them out,
I decided that before next year,
I would buy a couple of cheaper lanterns,
paint them red,
and use them next Christmas.

Then, I promptly forgot all about them.

Last weekend, Steve went shopping
(at Walmart on a Saturday - what a brave man!)
Later that day, he gave me an early gift - two red lanterns!

I thought this was the sweetest gift!

Take care,
Denise

Let's get this show on the road!

Remodeling the kitchen
begins with
painting at least part if the living room.

Our hutch currently
resides in front of one
of the kitchen windows.

This hutch needs to move
to the living room on the wall
where the bookcase is.

So, the bookcase needs to
move to another wall.

However, that wall needs to be painted
since I filled in holes and did
not have the correct color of
paint on hand.
Actually,
I thought
I did, but once the paint dried,
I noticed paint splotches everywhere.

Four day weekend = time to paint.
Well, at least paint one wall.
For some reason,
I have no motivation to
get moving on this project.
I think the new paint I bought
is lighter than the current color (which I do love.)
Which means, at some point,
I  will need to
paint each wall.
Maybe tomorrow will bring some excitement
to get this show on the road!

Take care,
Denise

changes?

After eight years...
talk of adding on...
not being able to make decisions...

I think we are going to remodel
our kitchen.

Here it is
straight from the 1940's...

Steve has a plan.
I am going with that plan.
We will have a smaller space
(is that possible?)
but, the space should be
much more efficient.

Stay tuned...

Therapy

Lately, most of my time is spent working on school work.

Grading,
Recording grades,
Writing tests,
Emailing,
Grading,
Planning lessons,
Grading,
Learning new technology,
Recording grades...

Although not quite finished, I spent a good part of yesterday with school work.

My reward?

Scrapbooking.

Scrapbooking what?

tubs of saved notes,
pictures,
letters,
and certificates
from twenty-one
years of teaching
first, second, fifth, and sixth graders.

Everything makes me smile.

Of course, music is playing.

This is my therapy.

Take care,
Denise

finding a balance

School has begun for both Michelle and me.
Michelle seems happy to be back in school.
Speedway High School does a nice job giving the seniors some perks
(like being able to leave school a little early when there is a convo that
they don't need to attend at the end of the day.)

Me?
Well, so far I have not been such a happy camper.
But, I know things will get better.
I love the people I work with.
I just need to find that balance between work and home.

My first thought at going to the high school football game last night?
No way, I have so much to do this weekend for school and won't be
home much.

But I needed the football game.
Friday night football games in a small town are fun.
I saw friends and neighbors.
Michelle and Steve were there.
Erin, Eric, and Gus were there.

To survive the year, I must find this balance
between schoolwork and family fun.

One day at a time.

Take care,

Denise

A brand new plant

Recently, Michelle
burned herself on the hair straightener.
I remembered having
an aloe vera plant in
my kitchen for years
as Ted and Erin were growing up.
The sap inside the plant
helps heal burns and quickly
takes away the sting.
I even remember using it
on sunburns.

So, I was then wishing I had an aloe
plant for Michelle to use.

Well, the other day, on the second of
two trips to the grocery store
I saw some aloe plants for sale.

I snagged one and now have
it happily growing on my
sunny kitchen windowsill.

They take very little care, just
sunlight and a little bit of water.
Let's just hope Miss Mookie
doesn't discover this lovely, little plant!

Take care,
Denise

Can't beat this pay!

Jess is in Florida.
Ted has been working
three 14 hour days.
Big Sherwin Williams sale.
Poor Ted.

Actually, poor Rocky and Bailey.
Dogs just don't like being cooped up
for fourteen hours three days in a row!

I was happy to visit them, let them out,
and feed them.

They were happy to see me, too.

When I did some plant watering for
Ted and Jess yesterday, I noticed these lovely
blooms.

Well today when I came over, I
brought scissors.

Great pay, for some fun doggie visits.

Take care,
Denise

it's hot, hot, hot!

Hot - it's hot everywhere in the US this week!

I won't complain about the heat -- after being so cold last winter!
This morning, as I was out watering my plants, I noticed my daisies and herbs were thriving.
I am fine with that.

Take care,
Denise

fun summer evenings

Three day festival at our church.
Eating yummy food.
Visiting with friends.
Listening to the bands play each evening.
Living across the street from our church becomes the best seat in the house by the third night.

Take care,
Denise

simple living

I love the idea of simple living:

composting (check)
growing some of our own food (check, although I think we can do better)
eating fresh produce and buying local (check)
being conscious of not being wasteful (check)
having one car (we have a long way to go - two cars and a truck)
reusing and sprucing up old furniture (check)
use some of my fabric stash on sewing projects (check)

After we moved in, I discovered that our property consisted of rock-hard dirt.
I remember jumping on the shovel with all of my weight, and the shovel went nowhere.
I was pretty depressed because this yard needed a lot of work (it still does!)

Steve built me a couple of raised beds and I have been building a few, too.

He also did some research and bought me a composter for my birthday.
Now I will tell you, at the time, he was at some meeting at church
(with a bunch of women)
and they were shocked that he would buy something like that for my birthday.
He told them that was what I wanted.
They think I am weird.

But, never having been one for fancy jewelry or clothes,
I was thrilled, I tell you, thrilled!

So, to get some yummy soil, I cook mine.
All it takes is adding crushed leaves, or a bag of sawdust
(one advantage of having a carpenter as a husband)
plus saving scraps of fruit, vegetables, and tea and coffee grounds.

Dump.

Spin.

Wait.

Yum!

Yes, my soil is rapidly improving.
I can now easily get a shovel into the dirt.

And, plants are actually growing!

I just recently found a type of sifter that will separate the good compost from the still composting chunks.  This simple screen was $$$.
I know dear Steve has some wood and screening somewhere to make one for me.
Yes, that is what I need!

Here's to simple living!

Take care,

Denise

tis the season...

I do like garage sale season.
Always trying to keep a bit of cash on me,
I will stop at any sale that looks promising.

Last week, the Speedway High School music department  had a sale at school.
I always feel as if I need to help them, so I do try to find something to buy.  :-)

Last year, I found my brass bunny bookends (which I decaupaged in old book pages.)

Well this year, I found a very heavy metal stool and an old picnic basket.
Not sure what I will do with the picnic basket,
but I will probably at least add some fabric lining.

The stool would look great with our Hoosier cabinet
(if we end up having it downstairs in the bar area.)

The bottom of the stool was wrapped in cardboard and tape.

Funny little felt and tape booties covered the feet.

Once everything was removed,
and a fair amount of cleaning was done,
I am quite happy with my seven dollar donation to the Speedway High School music department!

Until next time,
Denise

quiet time

I love to get up early, before anyone else in our home is up.

I fix myself some coffee and sit at the computer.

Oh, I guess I am usually not alone.

Dear Mookie loves to be up early, too!

Sunny Sunday

The herbs are growing wildly.

The flowers are lovely.

Even the *weeds* are too pretty to mow.
